About Kaal Ghatika

A digital recreation of the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock

The Vikramaditya Vedic Clock

The Vikramaditya Vedic Clock is a monumental timepiece inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 1, 2025 at Jantar Mantar, Ujjain. It represents India's ancient tradition of astronomical timekeeping, bringing the Surya Siddhanta system into a modern, observable format.

This app is a digital companion that brings the same Vedic timekeeping system to your device, allowing you to observe traditional Indian time wherever you are.

Based on Surya Siddhanta

The Surya Siddhanta is one of the oldest known astronomical texts of India, dating back thousands of years. It provides mathematical models for calculating planetary positions, eclipses, and — crucially — sunrise and sunset times that form the foundation of the Vedic calendar system.

What the App Shows

  • 30 Muhurtas — The traditional division of the day into 30 time periods (15 day + 15 night), each with its own name and significance
  • Ghati-Pala — Vedic time units where 1 Ghati = 24 modern minutes and 1 Pala = 24 modern seconds
  • Prahar — The eight watches of the day (4 day + 4 night), each spanning approximately 3 hours
  • Vikram Samvat — The traditional Hindu calendar year, currently in its 2082nd year
